HCWT was formed in 1965 by Rev Joseph C. Jeter DD and Sister Caterine E. Jeter. At the time, Dr Jeter was a pastor of a Baptist church in Philadelphia. While attending Philadelphia College of the Bible (Carin University), he met a number of Christian missionaries and evangelists. Hiscuriosity about international missions was growing. This led to him to connect with Dr Ernest Wilson who invited Dr Jeter to travel to east Africa to preach and participate in revivals.
After a series of trips to Africa, the Holy Spirit moved on his heart to consider think about full time missionary service. he shared his burdens with his wife, Sis Jeter. Jointly they decides to follow the call of The Lord .. as reflected in Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voce of the Lord saying:” Whom will I send and who will go for us?”
” Here am I! send me”
In the early development of the Have Christ Will Travel, Dr Jeter focused on evangelizing and enabling poorly supported missionaries in Africa and Haiti though documenting their needs and raising funds through various churches, denominations and individuals.
Over the years the mission has expanded to developed church planting, primary and secondary schools, after school, bible clubs, bible camps, vacation bible clubs, missionary training institute, and a weekly radio broadcast.
